John grew up in a musical household in Melbourne, Australia during the 1950’s. John’s father sang and played guitar.
”my earliest memories are of my father playing songs on the guitar to lull me to asleep. There were always one or two guitars in the house, and by the time I was six years old I’d learned half a dozen chords. It seemed a very natural thing that I was drawn to the instrument at such a young age.”
John began formally studying classical guitar in his late teens and by his early twenties was teaching in schools and Universities in Melbourne. In his late thirties John developed an interest in composition, and encouraged by his family, recorded several solo pieces for guitar. These pieces were picked up and played on local radio leading to an invitation to record an album with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. What followed was an interest in John’s music overseas by newly founded U.S. label, Eversound, who commissioned John to record an album for release Stateside. To date John has released three critically acclaimed albums in the US, Hallowed Moon, Still Gazing at the Moon and In Her Hands.

In comparing John’s playing to the late Michael Hedges, Bob Pierce had this to say:
“If any one player might be destined for superstardom in the world of guitar work, Mills is my vote for the leading candidate.”
